How to Fix a Leaking Radiator Valve (UK DIY Guide)
A leaking radiator valve can cause water damage to floors and reduce heating efficiency. Small drips are often caused by worn valve seals or loose connections and can usually be fixed without replacing the entire radiator.
This step-by-step UK DIY guide explains how to fix a leaking radiator valve safely and when professional help is required.
Tools You’ll Need
- Adjustable spanner
- Radiator bleed key
- Screwdriver
- PTFE tape
- Cloths and small container
Step 1: Identify the Type of Leak
Check carefully where the leak is coming from:
- Valve spindle (under the plastic cap)
- Valve connection nut
- Pipe joint
- Radiator body
Dry the area and monitor to confirm the source.
Step 2: Tighten the Valve Gland Nut
If the leak is from the spindle:
Remove the plastic cap.
Locate the small gland nut beneath.
Use a spanner to tighten it slightly (quarter turn only).
Test again for leaks.
Overtightening can damage the valve.
Step 3: Tighten the Valve Connection Nut
If the leak is at the pipe joint:
Turn off both radiator valves.
Place a cloth underneath.
Gently tighten the connection nut.
Do not force it.
Turn heating back on and test.
Step 4: Reapply PTFE Tape (If Necessary)
If tightening does not stop the leak:
Turn off heating and allow system to cool.
Drain the radiator partially.
Disconnect the leaking joint.
Wrap PTFE tape around the threads.
Reconnect and tighten securely.
Step 5: Test the System
Turn heating back on.
Check for leaks at all connections.
Monitor for several hours.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Tightening fittings while system is hot
- Overtightening brass fittings
- Ignoring corrosion
- Forgetting to check boiler pressure
- Attempting repairs without isolating valves
Persistent leaks may indicate a failing valve.
When to Call a Professional
You should contact a heating engineer if:
- The valve body is cracked
- The radiator needs fully draining
- Leaks continue after tightening
- Pipework requires alteration
- Boiler pressure drops significantly
